The Teachings of Jesus

A.  After Jesus was baptized, people heard a voice from heaven proclaim Jesus is the Son of God (Mat. 3:16)

B.  Jesus taught that he was sent from God (Luke 4:16-21)

C.  Jesus taught he was the way to the Father in Heaven (John 14:1-7)

D.  Jesus taught that he is the living water that brings eternal life.  (John 4:10-26)

E.  John, who preached of the coming Christ and baptized those who believed and repented, taught that Jesus was the Lamb of God who take away sin and those who believed in Jesus would have eternal life.  (John 1:29; 3:26-36)

F.  Jesus taught he is the bread of life and those who believe in him would recieve eternal life.  (John 6:35-51)

G.  Jesus predicted three times that the chief priests and scribes would have him killed and he would be raised on the third day.  (Matthew 16:21; 17:22-23; 20:17-19)

H.  Jesus taught that he must be lifted up, referring to is crucifixion, so that all could recieve eternal life.  (John 3:15; 8:28-30; 12:32-33)

I.  Jesus taught that God loved the world so much that he sent his son to save the world and give everyone who believes eternal life.  (John 3:16-18)

J.  Jesus taught that he came to preach the coming of the kingdom of God or heaven which is the church.  (Mark 1:15; Luke 4:42-44; 8:1; 16:16-17; Matthew 4:17; 4:23)

K.  Jesus taught that he came to fulfill the Law of the prophets.  (Matthew 5:17-20)

L.  Jesus taught the greatest commandment is the Lord, our our God, the Lord is one and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.  The second greatest command is to love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.  (Mark 12:29-31)

M.  Jesus taught that you must be born again to enter the Kigdom of God.  (John 3:3-15)

N.  Jesus taught to seek the kingdom of heaven and the things you need will be added to you.  (Matthew 6:31-34)

O.  Jesus predicted the Kingdom of God would come to power before some of the people he was teaching died.  (Mark 9:47)

P.  Jesus sent out 12 apostles the proclaim the kingdom of God.  (Luke 9:1-2)

Q.  Jesus taught that he would biuld his church based on Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God and he will give Peter the keys to the kingdom. (Matthew 16:15-19)

R.  Jesus taught his disciples or followers that in order to be great you must become a servant to all.  (John 13:12-17)

S.  Jesus taught his disciples to love one another as he loved them.  (John 13:34-35)

T.  Jesus taught that if you love him, you will follow his commands and you will remain in his love, as he remains his Father’s love. (John 15:7-10)

U. Jesus promised to send, the helper, the Holy Spirit, when he returned to heaven.  (John 14:16-27)

V.  After Jesus died on the cross, the earth shook, rocks were split, tombs opened and many of the believers who died came back to life, and seeing all this even the Roman officer keeping watch over Jesus said, “Truely this was the son of God.”  (Matthew 27:50-54)

W.  Jesus was buried and rose from the dead on the first day of the week.  (Matthew 27:57 to 28:10)

X.  Jesus directed the apostles to go and make disciples of every nation, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that he had commanded them.  (Matthew 28:18-20)

Compassion of Jesus

The compassion of Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30). Definition of compassion: suffering with another. 

I. JESUS TAUGHT THREE PARABLES WHICH INCLUDED LESSONS ON COMPASSION:

A. Luke 10:30-37 (notice verse 33) – The parable of the good Samaritan (refer also to I John 3:17)

     B. Luke 15:11-24 (notice verse 20) – Parable of the prodigal son

C. Matthew 18:21-35 (notice verse 27, 32-33) – Forgiveness

II. EXAMPLES OF THE COMPASSION OF JESUS:

A. Compassion for our trials and temptations (Hebrews 2:18, 4:14-5:2)

B. Compassion for people’s physical weaknesses (Matthew 9:35-38, 15:29-39)

C. Compassion for people’s infirmities. The healing of the:

1. Blind (Matthew 20:29-34)

2. Leper (Mark 1:40-42)

3. Demon possessed (Mark 5:18-19)

4. Evil spirit [Mark 9:17-27 (especially verse 22)]

D. Compassion for people’s grief in death

1. Raised a dead son (Luke 7:12-15)

2. Wept with Mary when Lazarus had died (John 11:32-35)

E. Compassion in judgement (John 8:3-11, 15, 7:24)

F. The Compassion of Jesus is seen in his association with the poor and “unclean” people.

1. Samaritans [John 4:5-42 (especially verses 9, 39-42)]

2. He touched a leper (Matthew 8:1-4)

3. Zacchaeus, a chief tax gatherer (Luke 19:1-10)

4. The great physician (Luke 5:27-32, 7:29)

G. Because Jesus told others what they needed to do (had compassion), he suffered

1. The rich young ruler rejected His teaching (Mark 10:17-22)

2. Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37-39)

H. The Compassion of Jesus can be seen during his crucifixion in His attitude toward:

1. His disciples before His death [John 17:12-26 (especially verses 15-17, 20-22, 24)]

2. Those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34)

3. The thief (Luke 23:42-43)

4. His Mother (John 19:26-27)
